The university was founded in 1943. It was created from the institute, evacuated to Chelyabinsk from Stalingrad. In 1952, two floors were built on, a tower and a spire.

The main building is the second tallest building in the city. On the roof of the building there are 2 copper sculptures: Prometheus and the goddess of Glory.
