National parks

Australia has over 500 national parks. Over 28 million hectares of

land is designated as national park-land, accounting for almost four per cent of Australia's land areas. In addition, a further six per cent of Australia is protected and includes state forests, nature parks and conservation reserves.

Australia is the flattest and (after Antarctica) the driest of conti-nents. Huge areas

of land are so dry that they are uninhabited. There are rainforests and vast plains in the north, snowfields in the south east, desert in the centre and fertile croplands in the east, south and south west. About one third of the country lies in the tropics.

Mountain ranges run from north to south along the east coast, reaching their

highest point in Mount Kosciusko (7,308 ft; 2,228 m).
The Great Barrier Reef, extending about 1,245 miles, lies along the north-east coast.
