State prison. The first prisoner was imprisoned in the Tower
in 1190.
Zoo. At the beginning of the XIII century, John the Landless contained lions in the Tower.
Mint. For more than 500 years, the Tower has been the main branch of the Royal Mint.
Kremlin functions:
Princely residence. Since 1264, the Kremlin has been the residence of Moscow princes.
The Museum. Since 1955, the Moscow Kremlin was partially open to visitors, and turned into an open-air museum.
Thought of as a defensive fortress.
