Past Simple (простое прошедшее время)
используется для обозначения действий, которое произошло в определённое время в прошлом и время совершения которого уже истекло

Past Continuous
(прошедшее длительное время)
Если описываемое продолжительное действие происходило на протяжении некоторого, неизвестного отрезка времени, в какой-то момент прошлого. То есть, чётких данных о том, сколько минут или часов длилось действие, нет, но сам факт его продолжительности важен для дальнейшего хода разговора.
Если оно длилось в то время, когда произошло ещё какое-то действие. То есть, одно из описываемых событий уже продолжалось на определённый момент, но вдруг началось другое событие, неотрывно связанное с первым.
Если несколько действий в прошлом происходили на одном отрезке времени. Неизвестно, одновременно ли они начались, или второе подключилось в какой-то момент к первому. Факт – в том, что оба они – равноценны и имеют одинаковое значение в разговоре.
