For most verbs we add -ing to the base form to make the -ing form:

Bake-baking
Smile-smiling
Skate-skating
Dance-dancing
Write-writing
When the verb ends in -e, we take off the -e and add -ing.

Swim-swimming
Run-running
Hug-hugging
Sit-sitting
Hop-hopping
When the verb ends in a vowel followed by a single consonant and if the last syllable is stressed, then the consonant is doubled.

Lie-lying
For verbs that end in -ie, change the ie to y before adding -ing

Divide the verbs into the right column:
smile, play, make, lie, help, run, swim, hop, jump, have, read, wear, wave, point, hug
