Arzamas is a city in Nizhny Novgorod region, Russia.
It was founded in
1578 by Ivan the Terrible.
Arzamas has had the status of a town since 1781.
By 1737 the population was 7000.
Nowadays over 106 thousand people here.
In the 19th century Arzamas had over twenty churches and cathedrals.
From 1954 to 1957 Arzamas was the center of Arzamas region.
The total area of the town is over 34 square kilometres.

The most noticeable Arzamas museums are dedicated to famous Russian writers Arkady
Gaydar and Maxim Gorky who used to live in Arzamas.
Gaydar museum is situated in Gorky street. Its exposition shows the biography of the writer, narrates about his childhood and his literary works.
Gorky museums is located in Carl Marx street. Some of the original books are in its collection. Moreover you will be able to see the way Gorky lived while being in exile in Arzamas.
