Valentin Serov was born in St. Petersburg in 1865. His father, Alexander Serov,

was a music critic and composer, and his mother Valentina Serova was the pianist and first female composer in Russia. The young pianist early noticed her son’s talent for drawing and gave him to study with the German engraver Karl Köpping. When Serov was nine years old, his young teacher Ilya Repin (August 5, 1844 - September 29, 1930) became his teacher. Serov settled in his house - they wrote sitters together and went to sketches. In 1880, Serov passed the exams and entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the class of Pavel Chistyakov (1832—1919).
