Hatching, Cross-Hatching and Stippling are drawing techniques designed to by lines and dots.

This technique allows the artist control over tones and detail, while using the white of the paper for luminosity.

The mark making can be loose and expressive….

or tight and controlled.

Either way, be conscious of how your marks should support the underlying structure of the form.

Be aware of how each drawing media will affect application and appearance.

Left drawing is done in graphite, right drawing is done with charcoal.

As well as the color and tone of your paper.

Notice how much your tone becomes part of the drawing. This is a great example of editing. More is less.

Too much white…not enough tone is allowed to be part of the drawing.

Finally, be aware of how the artists use a similar color of drawing tool as the paper, so they work together.
