HISTORY OF CLC

Cognitive linguistics is a modern school of linguistic thought and practice.

It is concerned with investigating the relationship between human language, the mind and socio-physical experience.

It originally emerged in the 1970s (Lakoff & Thompson, 1975; Rosch, 1975) .

Since the last two decades of the XX century the term “linguoculturology” has been often used in association with the term “culture-through-language studies”.

“In the process of learning, the union of language and information relating to the national culture is called 'linguocultural' teaching. ”- Kostomarov and Vereshchagin, Language and Culture, 1983.

Kettel and Douglas (2003, p. 48) state, “Single theme multiple text instruction helps

students understand the theme from a variety of perspectives.”

Kettel and Douglas (2003) also encourage the use of other print materials, such as textbooks, magazines, newspapers, and the Internet.

TTU is framework for organizing content and learning experiences around topics or themes that cross curricular boundaries (Cooper, 1997; Shanahan, 2000)

Since they generally cross curricular areas during a large portion of the school day, thematic units differ from topical units (Sawyer & Sawyer, 1993)

Ms. Judd did one experiment in 2005. She chose Lynne Cherry's A River Ran Wild as the focus of the thematic unit on the environment. Ms. Judd helped the students see the relevance of the story to their own environment. She tried to show how a book can be the hub of TTU.

Conclusion

CLC has become one of the most promising fields in linguistics, education and

cognitive science in general. The investigation and description of language and culture, their interaction, interconnection, and different types of correspondence, is a complex problem's the most effective solution of which is the analysis of cultural concepts, the so-called stereotypes of national identities and, in a wider sense, the whole cultural mind. TTU is a way of teaching and learning where by many areas of curriculum are connected together and integrated within a theme. TTU allows for learning to be more natural and less fragmented. It is a great alternative to the traditional school day that is divided by time devoted to different subject areas where children practice exercises related to nothing more than that activity.
