![A cottage is, typically, a small house. The word comes](/_ipx/f_webp&q_80&fit_contain&s_1440x1080/imagesDir/jpg/282858/slide-7.jpg)
A cottage is, typically, a small house. The word comes from
England where it originally was a house that has a ground floor, with a first, lower storey of bedrooms which fit within the roofspace.
Originally in the Middle Ages, cottages housed agricultural workers and their friends and families. The term cottage denoted the dwelling of a cotter (farmer).
Irish cottages were historically the homes of farm workers and labourers, but in recent years the term has assumed a romantic connotation especially when referring to cottages with thatched roofs (made of straw, plant stalks or foliage).
