Halloween is an annual holiday.

It was an ancient Celtic festival.
But now it is the Christian holiday - All Saints' Day.

The ancient Celts believed that the border between this world and the Otherworld became thin on this day and spirits (both harmless and harmful) could pass through.

The family's ancestors were honored and invited home while harmful spirits were warded off.

The Celts thought that on Halloween the witches came out. As they were afraid of the witches they put on different clothes and painted their faces to deceive the evil spirits.
They also placed food and small gifts near the doors of their houses for the witches.

Halloween costumes are traditionally monsters, ghosts, skeletons, witches and devils. They were worn to scare off evil spirits.

Witches have a long history. Legends tell that witches gather, arriving on broomsticks, to celebrate a party.
Superstitions tell that witches cast spells on unsuspecting people, transform themselves into different forms.

A symbol of Halloween is Jack-o-lantern.
According to folklore,
Jack-o-lantern got his name from a man named Jack.
He played jokes with the devil and was punished for it.

There is a tradition of trick-or-treating on Halloween.
Children go from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or money, with the question, "Trick or treat?"
Sometimes children perform some sort of tricks, sing songs or tells ghost stories to earn their treats.

If you hear footsteps behind you on Halloween night, do not turn around to see who it is.
It is considered that a person was born on Halloween could see and talk to spirits.
If you see a spider on Halloween, it could be the spirit of a dead.

Many superstitions have evolved about black cats. It was believed that witches could change into cats.
Some people also believed that cats were the spirits of the dead.
One of the best known superstitions is that
if a black cat cross your path you have to turn around and go back because if you go on
bad luck would strike you.
