The Past Indefinite употребляется:
для выражения действия, происходившего когда-то в прошлом и не связанного с настоящим.
При этом момент совершения действия либо указывается с помощью слов-маркеров, либо подразумевается.

Также указателями прошедшего времени в английском являются слова when (когда) и where (где) — указание на некое время в прошлом.
