In modern borders the population of the city changed as follows:
1.1999 — 102 505
2.2009 — 142 899
According to the latest data the population of the territory subordinated to akimat of the city of Turkestan, 235,8 thousand people (2011), including city — 62,4% (actually the city of Turkestan of 147,1 thousand people), rural − 37,6% in 35 villages united in 12 rural administrations.
National structure
National structure: Kazakhs − 52,5%, Uzbeks — 45,2%, Russian, etc. — 2,3%.

In 1991 the Turkestani university with 13 faculties, in 1993 renamed into the International Kazakh-Turkish University of Hodzhi Ahmet Yassavi (22 thousand students) is open here. Now the largest on the number of pupils HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION of Central Asia.
